January Retail Sales Sizzle

Unseasonably warm weather turned up the heat under retail sales in January, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.

Retail sales jumped 2.3% in the month, the highest gain since May of 2004. Sales of clothing and accessories grew by 4.2%.

While January sales far outpaced predictions, economists now expect February sales to come in lower than expected due to last month’s spending spree and a return to colder weather in the northeast.
