Berlin Greets Its First Fashion Week

Fashion destination: Berlin? It may not have the reputation of Paris, London or New York, but Berlin is aiming to improve its status as a fashion city by holding its first Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Show organizers are hoping to bank on the German capital’s transformation into a style-conscious city, aided by the entrance of new luxury stores and the fashion demands of a young and creative population.

Fashion Week will run from Thursday to Sunday of this week, featuring designers such as Puma, Hugo, Annett Roestel and Prototype.

Paris Shows Focus On Darker, Edgier Looks

Fashion Week moved to Paris on Thursday, where it shed he light casualness of Milan. Looks got darker, more thoughtful and edgy with designs by Yohji Yamamoto, John Galliano and hot Japanese line Number (N)ine.

The prevalent white suits, skinny ties and sandals we saw in Milan were nowhere in sight, so we are eager to see what the new collections bring.

Take, for instance, Viktor & Rolf’s decision to send its models down the runway with their own lighting rigs. In craftsmanship, Yohji Yamamoto continues to inspire with his pleated and gathered creations.

Milan Opens Runway Shows With Model Agreement

Milan kicked off its Fashion Week over the weekend, and this time there was a twist. The top fashion houses have signed an “anti-anorexia” agreement to ensure that only healthy models are sent down the runway.

Under the agreement, agencies and designers are supposed to send their models to doctors to be checked. The move aims to promote the image of “"healthy, sunny, generous Mediterranean beauty."

All Eyes On New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week got off to a triumphant start over the weekend, as observers applauded innovative looks from designers such as Alice Roi, Benjamin Cho and Karen Walker.

The Spring 2007 RTW collections are leaning toward light, contemporary styles that play with convention, such as Cho’s white silk dress vented with zippers.

Menswear Shows Strut Through Paris

The fashion world turned its attention from Milan to Paris over the weekend, where the spring/summer 2007 menswear shows are reaching full strut.

Reports so far point to a continuance in the pale palette and shorts theme we saw in Milan, although bright colors and ‘80s styles are also making a showing in the French capital.

Look for a full report in Blacks’s upcoming In Fashion wrap-up.

London Kicks Off Fashion Week

Fashionistas may still be digesting the surprisingly somber vision of fall fashion presented in New York last week, but it’s already time to clear our palates for another look at autumn wear.

That’s because London kicked off its fashion week on Monday, promising (we hope) a bit more of the cheeky flair we’ve come accustomed to from the capital.

The show is being held in the impressive surrounds of the Natural History Museum and will feature designers such as Paul Costelloe, Paul Smith, John Rocha, Karen Walker and Nicole Farhi.

U.S. Vogue editor Anna Wintour will also be attending, with the paparazzi sure to follow.

The Return Of Grunge?

Of all the shows at New York Fashion Week, it was Marc Jacobs’s supersized knits, skirts over pants with boots, thick socks, and other grunge flashbacks that garnered the most attention.

There were some more refined elements, such as chic leather skirts and metallic and sequined pieces for evening, but the overall look was dark, muted, and heavily layered.

Does this mean grunge is back? The designer himself has shied away from the word but it still remains on the tip of everyone’s tongue. That said, Jacobs didn’t fail to produce some lust-worthy pieces, including luscious coats and handbags.

Rich Luxury, From Gucci To Armani

The Gucci man has undergone a transformation under creative director John Ray, showing a darker, more romantic side at the Milan autumn/winter ’06-’07 menswear show.

The new Gucci man wears a heavy wool frock coat countered with a white, embroidered shirt and pinstriped pants.

This look was quite different from Dsquared’s fun-poking at British royalty, done with washed jeans, riding coats an biker boots.

Armani, on the other hand, put a detailed spin on luxury, showing heavy knits with crushed velvet coats and tailored suits, creating an intoxicating mix of textures and hues.

These were three very different collections with one common denominator – indulgent luxury.

Fall Menswear Collections Delight Milan

The fall/winter menswear shows hit Milan this week with a resounding ‘oomph’ as designers such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry Prorsum delighted crowds with their high-octane style.

D&G managed to nail down modern elegance with fine knits, pleated trousers and rich velvet neck scarves.

Versace, meanwhile, went straight for sexy with masculine tailored jackets, leather trim, and thigh-grabbing trousers.

Burberry’s presentation of pinstriped suits, glossy oversized leather bags and boysenberry shirts were an English dandy’s dream.

For colors think grays, blues, deep emeralds and berries. The hot ticket item: a waistcoat.

Camouflage Couture

You know you’re hot when you can take camouflage to couture and receive accolades from every corner. Such is the case of Yohji Yamamoto whose ruffled camouflage dresses received high praise in Paris earlier this week.

Yamamoto’s collection wasn’t entirely war-torn, however. He also showed his avant-garde edge with stiff white blouses, bondage themed dresses and ‘crocodile’ cut coats.

In a runway season marked by toned down styles, Yamamoto demonstrated that fashion sometimes means war.

Gucci Tamed?

Frida Giannini put on her first major runway show in Milan this week since taking over from Tom Ford at Gucci. Her pieces received mixed reviews from style mavens, some of whom complained that the clothes were “too tame.”

Some of her choices, like tea dresses, floral blouses and cashmere polos, didn’t do much to spark Gucci’s trademark desire, but Giannini insisted that they would attract the modern young woman.

If Gucci still spells glamour the style house is definitely leaning more toward Ingrid Bergman than Mae West.

London Fashion Week

All eyes are on the British capital as fashion forward designers display their wares during London Fashion Week. Military styling, preppie fashions and opulent details, such as beading and stitching, have all been seen strutting up and down the runways. Craft-inspired pieces featuring knit and crochet have also been spotted as emerging trends.

The show has historically been a key venue for a new generation of designers. Now well-known names, such as Alexander McQueen, got some of their first exposure during London Fashion Week and scrupulous fashionistas will be monitoring the runways for the next hot influence.

No Luxury Limits

There’s good news for the highest of high-end retailers at the Spring shows in New York this week. Early indications suggest that there is no price ceiling for luxury items, with show goers hungrily eyeing coats over $5000.

Designers such as Prada and Marc Jacobs have draped their runways with must-have items that appear to defy previous price barriers.

Although the U.S economy in general shows signs of strain, the worldwide increase in millionaires and a growing demand for luxury items among the population at-large keeps the market strong.
